Update on Myotonia Congenita on Unique V D
Havenstad
Our Unique V D Havenstad was diagosed as a carrier of
this genetic fault in 2000, and we would like to use this dog to
explain how we managed to continue our breeding on his bloodline due
to this diagnose.
Himself was not bred to anymore when we got
confirmation on his status. But as we kept bitches out of him, we
did'nt want to give up these dogs in breeding just because of this.
Mytonia Congenita is a inherreted fault that can
be fatal if you breed on dogs that carries the gene. However, both
parents have to carry the gene to produce dogs that gets myotonia.
If only one of the parents carries the the gene the offsprings they
produce can also be carriers.
What we did when we found out that Nick carried
the gene, we tested the offsprings that we planned to continue
breeding with.
When you test offsprings of carriers approx. 50 %
will gain the gene, and 50 % will be normal, or freetested. When a dog or a bitch out of a carrier is tested normal these dogs
will NOT get the genetic fault, either their offsprings.
We have tested our dogs out of Nick and those dogs
me and Pauline have in our breeding has a normal status. So if you have a dog that carries some of Unique V D Havenstad's
siblings or other dogs close related to his fathers side ( Mother to
him is comfirmed freetested) you should test this dog before
breeding to it.

If you want more information about the test or
have any other questions about Nick and his status, please contact
me or Pauline.
